54, Fat and Out-of-Shape

Dear Family & Friends,

As most of you know, I’m a fairly private person. I am active on social media, but I use it mainly to update family and friends on how my kids are doing and updates on their baseball events. That… and also a lot of talk on the 2024 World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

However, I’d like to share something very important today. Something more private than usual, and quite frankly, something way out of my comfort zone. Since passing the 50 year milestone a few years ago, I’ve seen my health slowly deteriorate. Honestly, I’ve completely let my body and my health go to shit. I’ve tried diets here and there, but none seem to work. I’ve tried various workout routines, but none seem to last. Before my health gets worse, and for the sake of myself and my family, I need to start a serious mission to turn things around now. And the only way I believe that I’ll be held accountable for maintaining any new health and fitness lifestyle is by keeping a brutally honest online journal for you to follow. I’m asking my friends and family to hold me accountable if I start slacking. Provide feedback when needed. Cheer me on when things get tough.

When we were in our 20’s, Nancy and I were the first of our friends to get married. After we tied the knot, we attended weddings every weekend for years. Then came the babies. We plopped out three beautiful boys and attended dozens of baby showers. Sadly, after the weddings and baby showers, our first set of friends got divorced. And then another… and another. But recently, as we turned 50, friends started passing away here and there. The cycle of life.

I need to get healthy ASAP. I have too much left to see and experience. I need to see my three sons get married and start their own families. I need to travel more. Witness a few more Dodgers World Series Championship Parades.

I’ve decided to keep it simple to start.

  1. Eat better and healthier.
  2. Start working out again. Exercise!
  3. Calorie Deficit – Burn more calories than I consume.

I like to drink, so I’ll need to cut that down. I enjoy eating out and trying new restaurants, so I’ll need to learn how to order healthier or just eat smaller portions when I eat out.

Before we had kids, we went to the gym 3-5 days per week. I wore a size 32′ waist and a Medium or Large shirt. I was 5’10” and weighed around 180. I’m afraid to weigh myself now, but I’ll need to know where I’m starting from. All I know is I’ve had to buy size 36″ waist pants lately, and I feel like 38″ would probably be a better fit. I’ve held onto all of my 34″ pants and Large shirts, but I’ve been buying cheap XL and XXL shirts at Costco with the intent to throw them away when I lose some weight. This is just sad and embarrassing!!

I haven’t weighed myself in years… because we don’t even own a scale!! Fortunately, the best part of starting a new journey is buying new gadgets to help. I ordered the neck mounted camera that POV Husband uses to film his cooking videos and also a digital weight/BMI scale.

February 18th is the start date!! Wish me luck!

Cheers!

Rex
